Russell Westbrook passes Michael Jordan with 8th straight triple-double

Russell Westbrook created a piece of history Thursday as he helped the Thunder defeat the Grizzlies 117-95 while recording his eighth straight triple-double

With 15 points, 13 rebounds and 15 assists, Westbrook passed Michael Jordan for the longest streak of triple-doubles in 51 years. He secured the feat with an offensive rebound and a putback with 4:29 left in the third quarter.

“Russell, in my opinion, the entire year has done a great job moving the ball, helping us play with pace, pushing the ball up the floor on misses and makes,” Thunder coach Billy Donovan said after Thursday’s victory (via NewsOK). “We just didn’t shoot the ball well earlier in the year, so maybe some of these numbers didn’t look quite like they do now.”

Westbrook is averaging a triple-double this season with 21.2 points, 11.1 rebounds and a league-leading 11.2 assists per game, but that isn’t new territory for the 30-year-old guard. He has averaged a triple-double in his last two seasons as well. Oscar Robertson is the only other player in league history to have averaged a triple-double throughout a season, and he did it once.

Westbrook is third on the all-time list with 125 career triple-doubles, behind only Robertson (181) and Magic Johnson (138).
